Interzum 2025: innovation, sustainability and digitalisation at the centre of the furniture industry

From 20 to 23 May 2025, Cologne turned into the heart of the international furniture and interior design industry, hosting Interzum 2025, the world’s leading exhibition dedicated to subcontracting, materials and furniture components. The event took place in the pavilions of Koelnmesse, one of the most important trade fairs in Europe, confirming itself as an indispensable crossroads for producers, designers, architects, buyers and innovators from all over the world.

With more than 1,600 exhibitors from 57 countries and about 60,000 professional visitors from 148 nations, Interzum has consolidated its role not only as a showcase of excellence, but also as global hub for business and networking in the furniture and components industry. The breadth of the offer has ranged from the most innovative materials for surfaces and coatings to smart technologies for the automation of environments, passing through sustainable and bio-based solutions increasingly central to the contemporary market.

The international atmosphere and the high profile of the operators involved made the event a real platform cultural and technological exchange, where companies not only show their products, but anticipate future trends, tighten strategic collaborations and shape the production models of tomorrow. Interzum 2025 has thus distinguished itself as a key appointment for those who want to be protagonist of theevolution of the furniture industry in the era of sustainability and digitalisation.

A focus on sustainability and innovation

The central theme of this edition of Interzum, "Rethinking Resources: Circular and Bio-based Solutions", put at the centre of the debate the need to radically rethink the entire production cycle of the sector, promoting sustainable materials and circular economy models. The objective is clear: to reduce the environmental impact of the furniture industry and to contribute concretely to the ecological transition. In this context, many exhibitors have presented solutions that combine aesthetics, performance and sustainability, as panels made with recycled materials, bio-based fabrics, coatings without harmful substances and glues with low environmental impact.

It was not just a matter of communication, but of a tangible transformation in place in the way of designing, producing and distributing furnishings, in line with European regulations and increasing expectations of end consumers. The focus on circular solutions also involved logistics, packaging and end-of-life products, stimulating a shared reflection on how to reduce waste and optimize the use of resources at every stage of the supply chain.

In this scenario, Italy played a leading role. With 275 exhibiting companies spread over an area of 21,100 sqm, represented the largest national delegation of the fair, exceeding even the participation of German companiestraditionally strong at home. This significant presence is the concrete demonstration of strategic weight of the Italian furniture and design industry internationally: a sector that combines artisanal and industrial skills, innovation and attention to environmental values, contributing significantly to the identity and competitiveness of Made in Italy in the world.

The active Italian participation offered a split of the best practices in the sector: from the adoption of sustainable materials to the integration of digital technologies in production processes, up to new visions of living in which the environment, functionality and well-being of the user live in harmony. A strong and clear signal: the future of the furniture also — and above all — passes by the ability to innovate responsibly.
